NYC Stories – 2023-2024

NYC Stories series is collection of work developed in the process of searching for the Genius Loci of the New York City. My art philosophy emerged as an attempt to deconstruct my relationships with the area where I live. I was trying to understand why I ended up here and why did I stay.

New York is a money sucking pit, it doesn’t matter how much you earn – it’s never enough. You always feel the pressure to move faster, do more and do better. New York City is a drug and you get addicted to it: city gives you everything and takes everything from you. You’re rich and you’re poor at the same time.

New York City is a whole universe condensed into a pickle jar. There’s almost no spare physical space, so gold will be laying over construction dirt and luxury rentals and housing projects will line up in one tight block.

This environment creates indescribable emotions, you are in a melting pot and you have a melting pot inside. Textures, colors, smells and sounds manufacture a mix of feelings fluctuating somewhere between fascination and disgust. It took me very long to deconstruct New York’s appeal, but it’s exactly that: the short distance between fascination and disgust and their interchangeability. This is a game. I am playing it.
